Whatever you might say about Kim Woodburn<\/a>, one thing is certain, she was always true to her word and lived life her way.<\/p>\n

Woodburn died at the age of 83<\/a> yesterday following a \u2018short illness\u2019, leaving behind one of the most unique legacies in showbiz.<\/p>\n

Calling Woodburn a \u2018reality TV icon\u2019 doesn\u2019t do her justice; she was something so much greater \u2013 especially to the LGBTQ+ community.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I briefly worked with Woodburn when she became Metro\u2019s I\u2019m A Celebrity columnist<\/a> in 2022. There was absolutely no one else I wanted for that column; if she didn\u2019t do it then it simply shouldn\u2019t go ahead.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She was simply brilliant and a rarity in entertainment now, which is so cautious and dry, its golden years are so far behind us.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll truly miss Kim Woodburn. She was the most badly behaved class act I\u2019ve ever come across and the gay community hasn\u2019t just lost a meme-queen, it\u2019s lost a true ally. This is especially true when fearless voices such as hers are becoming increasingly hard to come by.<\/p>\n<p>My admiration of this <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/06\/17\/queen-clean-kim-woodburn-became-a-beloved-tv-star-50-23434982\/\">national treasure<\/a> began 22 years ago when How Clean Is Your House launched. But it was when she was snapped up for I\u2019m A Celebrity in 2009 that a star \u2013 and gay icon \u2013 was really born.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She was exceptional. She was a drag queen in jungle gear; rarely would her conversation not turn to \u2018bonking\u2019, and if she wasn\u2019t talking about sex she was scolding her sexless campmates.<\/p>\n<p>She came second that year, losing out to <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/gino-dacampo\/\">Gino D\u2019Acampo<\/a>, but that didn\u2019t matter. She\u2019d become a TV giant in her own right.<\/p>\n<p>And when it seemed her brightest days on television were behind her, she was about to become a true national treasure after she single-handedly became the most disruptive <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/celebrity-big-brother\/\">Celebrity Big Brother<\/a> housemate of all-time.<\/p>\n<section class=\"metro-comment-cta\">\n<div class=\"metro-comment-cta__inner\"><span class=\"metro-comment-cta__text-wrap\"><title>Comment now<\/title><span class=\"metro-comment-cta__text\">What\u2019s your favourite Kim Woodburn moment? She was camper than anyone I\u2019ve ever known.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For context, <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2018\/08\/29\/remember-when-kim-woodburn-was-removed-from-the-celeb-big-bro-house-by-security-7893480\/\">Woodburn had to be removed from the house<\/a> temporarily when a row broke out over who had the toughest life to-date. You could disagree with Woodburn on the correct way to eat a chocolate digestive and seconds later security would be called in.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, it got so out of hand that while being dragged out of the house by guards, she told footballer Jamie O\u2019Hara: \u2018I wouldn\u2019t s**t on you if you were on fire\u2026 You\u2019re an adulterer that two-timed your wife and she\u2019s got three kids!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Once she was embraced by the LGBTQ+ community with open arms, she embraced them back \u2013 proud in her allyship and making numerous appearances in queer spaces \u2013 and who on Loose Women for a <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/06\/13\/kim-woodburn-claims-itv-lied-about-infamous-coleen-nolan-interview-18941346\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/06\/13\/kim-woodburn-claims-itv-lied-about-infamous-coleen-nolan-interview-18941346\/\">\u2018reconciliation\u2019 with Coleen Nolan<\/a> and took on the entire panel without breaking a sweat, you\u2019ll see what I mean.<\/p>\n<p>Even if she had the delivery of a bull in a china shop, she always stood by her convictions and, for me, that\u2019s what integrity is all about.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, seeing that same level of integrity is becoming increasingly rare. Celebrities and politicians who once gave LGBTQ+ people their word that they\u2019d always have our backs, marched with us at Pride or declared \u2018trans right are human rights\u2019 are now too scared to stand by us.<\/p>\n<p>She may not have always got it right, like appearing on GB News to discuss same-sex changing rooms and declaring \u2018a man\u2019s a man\u2019 and a \u2018woman\u2019s a woman\u2019. There isn\u2019t a day that goes by when I don\u2019t see a Kim Woodburn clip being thrown around social media.<\/p>\n<p>That impact was best celebrated on the very first series of Drag Race UK by its eventual winner <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/the-vivienne\/\">The Vivienne<\/a>. Viv did an impression of Woodburn for RuPaul and was a stroke of genius, capturing every single inch of Woodburn\u2019s unapologetically ferocious charm with impeccable precision.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/01\/05\/rupauls-drag-race-star-vivienne-dies-aged-32-22298127\/\">Viv died at the beginning of this year,<\/a> with Woodburn among the many mourners <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/01\/27\/ian-h-watkins-jade-thirlwall-among-mourners-arriving-viviennes-funeral-22441843\/\">at their funeral<\/a>.
